Q&A: Do (Protestant) Christians participate in fasting during lent, or is this something that only Catholics participate in?

QUESTIONDo (Protestant) Christians participate in fasting during lent, or is this something that only Catholics participate in?

Answer: Some do. But usually only Protestant groups that come from liturgical church expressions. Modern Evangelicalism largely ignores Lent in order to focus on the celebration of Easter, which is what Lent is leading up to in the first place. But even Baptist churches, which traditionally have not observed Lent are starting to jump on the bandwagon.

  1. There is, and was a reason for the Protestant Reformation. The magisterium held a higher authority than scripture. As such most Protestants rejected the extra-biblical traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. We have the two sacraments of baptism, and communion. Traditions outside of these two graces also became occasions for idolatry, pride, and self-righteousness.

  2. Yup. Traditions in and of themselves aren't bad, but when they are elevated above Scripture, or even given an equal status of authority as Scripture it becomes a huge problem.
